Sinds het vroege internet worden metaforen uit architectuur of stedenbouw gebruikt om het internet beter te begrijpen, zoals de ‘Digital Highway’ en de Digitale stad. Deze avond staan de architecturale ruïne en ruïne-esthetiek centraal om het einde van het internet te visualiseren. Welke vorm zullen de overblijfselen van het internet aannemen? Hoe ziet digitaal verval eruit en in hoeverre moet dat voorkomen of bestreden worden? Wat moet behouden of bewaard worden, en welke rol speelt het archief hierin? 

RICHARD VIJGEN richt zich als kunstenaar, ontwerper en docent op het visualiseren van data, netwerken en algoritmes. Met Deleted Cities 3.0 (2017) begeeft Vijgen zich op het vlak van digitale archeologie, en wekt hij het verdwenen internetfenomeen Geocities opnieuw tot leven.  

MARIANA MARANGONI onderzoekt de materialiteit van media, en combineert daarin het digitale met sculptuur.  Marangoni interesseert zich in de manier waarop digitaal verval op internet zichtbaar wordt of vaak met opzet verborgen blijft, en stelt vragen over wat bewaard moet worden. Marangoni’s werk Merciless Entropy (2021) onderzoekt de fragiele basis van het internet en gebruikt hiervoor een dystopische ruïne-esthetiek.  

MICHIEL HUIJBEN richt zich als beeldend kunstenaar vooral op architectuur. Since the early days of the internet, architectonic and urban metaphors, such as the ‘digital highway’ and the Digital City, are used to understand the internet better. This evening we’ll be focusing on the architectonic ruin and ruin aesthetics to visualise the end of the internet. Which form will internet’s remnants have? What does digital decay look like and to which extent should we try to prevent it? What do we need to save and what role does the archive have in this?

RICHARD VIJGEN is an artist, designer and teacher focusing on the visualisation of data, networks, and algorithms. In his work Deleted Cities 3.0 (2017) he turns to digital archeology to bring new life to the internet phenomenon Geocities, which was shut down in 2009.

MARIANA MARANGONI combines the digital with the sculptural to research the materiality of media. She is interested in the way digital decay on the internet is made either visible or deliberately hidden, and wonders what should be saved and what not. Marangoni’s work Merciless Entropy (2021) explores the fragile basis of the internet while using dystopian ruin aesthetics.

MICHIEL HUIJBEN’s work centers around architecture. His writing, performances and installations depart from, draw on, or intervene in built environments to voice unspoken narratives and conjure speculative legacies.
